Women are disproportionately affected by sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the U.S. and throughout the world. Women who have untreated STDs are at increased risk for acquiring other STDs, developing pelvic inflammatory disease, involuntary infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and chronic pelvic pain. Women are also at higher risk for cervical cancer (e.g., HPV) and HIV-related illness. Presentations in this session will address important STD-related issues for women. Communication and cultural aspects of STDs, including HIV, have not been well studied nor understood. Repeat STDs are a concern for women and could be a result of physiological characteristics, socio-cultural factors, socioeconomic characteristics, and behavioral factors. The effects of domestic violence on STDs is also part of this session.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant will be able to: (1) Discuss factors and interventions associated with STD recidivism ("frequent flyers") and attributions among women; (2) Gain an understanding of women's sexual health from a communication perspective, including recommendations for tailoring educational messages; and (3) Describe the impact of women’s knowledge of sexual partner's risk on one's own decision making.
