Addressing Depression in Communities of Color in Los Angeles: Strategies and Lessons Learned from the Healthy African American Families (HAAF) Project
Depression is one of the leading causes of morbidity and disability worldwide. Despite the existence of effective treatments, only one in four Americans with depression receive appropriate treatment, and the rate is especially low among African Americans. Depression is a serious health disparity in communities of color. Eliminating health disparities is a goal of Healthy People 2010. To accomplish this, innovative health promotion and risk reduction programs are needed among disenfranchised populations. This session will present the background history, planning and operational structure, and health promotion activities of the Healthy African American Families and its collaborating partners, UCLA, RAND, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in addressing depression in communities of color. For over a decade, HAAF has partnered with federal agencies and local, state, and national organizations to develop a community-driven public health approach, using a community assets model, to improve the health of African American and Latino communities.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to:1. Discuss processes for building long-term community-based, participatory intervention strategies. 2. Discuss barriers and challenges to diagnosing and treating depression in communities of color.3. Discuss early research findings regarding depression conceptions and intervention strategies in communities of color.
