The present study explored differences in the perception of dating violence between younger (ages 12-14) and older (ages 18-20) adolescents using qualitative and quantitative research methods. Four focus groups (two younger and two older) were conducted to explore dating situations that were common to each age group. The common dating situations reported by the participants in the focus groups were incorporated into the development of two age-appropriate surveys. The surveys were administered to the respective age groups. Quantitative analyses revealed significant age differences among adolescents, as well as gender differences, in the perception of dating violence. The study's findings and implications for public health and evidence-based practice will be discussed.
