Abstract #107088

CDC: The future is now

Bradley A. Perkins, MD, MBA, Office of Strategy and Innovation, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1600 Clifton Road, Mailstop D-28, Atlanta, GA 30333, (404) 498-2904, bap4@cdc.gov

In 2003, the CDC embarked upon the 18-month Futures Initiative process to better prepare the agency to respond to the growing public health challenges of the 21st century. As a result, the CDC has streamlined its structures and is setting ambitious and far reaching health protection goals. In 2005, CDC began a year-long internal and external process to refine a set of draft 2015 goals around the themes of people, preparedness and places. In tandem, the agency also began to align its budget with these draft goals and, with its partners, to identify priority health areas in which investment will maximize the prospect of achieving the goals. Because the goals are national in scope, the agency recognizes that success will not be achieved by CDC alone but only through partnerships with all sectors of society. This effort has required CDC to function in new ways, with greater emphasis on cross-agency collaboration and drawing on expertise in new disciplines, such as translation and dissemination. Panelists will discuss the agency-wide cultural change that goals management brought to CDC - - including how the agency allocates its resources - - and the critical need for cross-sector working relationships to achieve gains in the nation's health.
