Recent studies suggest that immigrant women are at increased risk of mortality due to ischemic heart disease and stroke compared to their native-born counterparts. One possible explanation for this may be the increasing prevalence of underlying risk factors for these diseases. Diabetes is one major risk factor for ischemic heart disease and stroke, but few studies have examined diabetes prevalence in a large, nationally representative sample of native-born and immigrant women.

We will utilize data from the National Center for Health Statistics' 1998-2003 National Health Interview Surveys to assess self-reported diabetes prevalence in adult women age 18 and older by nativity status for four racial/ethnic groups. We will examine the likelihood of having diabetes, controlling for demographic, geographic, socio-economic, and health status factors. We will also conduct separate analyses for native-born and immigrant women, to determine if predictors of having diabetes are similar or different for the two groups of women. Finally, we examine the role that duration of residence in the U.S. plays in the likelihood of having diabetes among immigrant women.
