Abstract #109841

A fresh approach to public health system assessment: “Survey team” of respondents

Jane Suen, DrPH MS and Charles Magruder, MD MPH. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 4770 Buford Highway, Atlanta, GA 30341, 404-498-2705, jxs8@cdc.gov

Data was collected between July 2000 and April 2002 from a national survey of local public health jurisdictions, a collaboration of CDC and Department of Justice. In this survey, a fresh approach using a “survey team” of respondents was utilized to more fully represent the range of services required to respond to public health emergencies in the local public health system. We analyzed data from 2,007 jurisdictions covering the full population in 47 states, the District of Columbia, and 3 U.S, territories (American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, and Puerto Rico). Data was collected from 10,315 persons who completed the assessment as contributors to the “survey team”. The jurisdiction responses were completed by survey teams ranging in size from 1 to 50, with an average of 5.2 respondents on a survey team. We report the extent to which this approach was used by respondent jurisdictions to complete the survey and provide descriptive statistics on the 9,923 “survey team” respondents who provided “job” category information. The distribution of “survey team” size by population of jurisdiction is also assessed.
