Three different topics are introduced in this session. An introduction to the Food and Drug Administration's risk assessment of human health risks from the use of antimicrobials in food animal production will be presented. Additional mathematical models assessing the risks and benefits of antimicrobial use will be discussed. The public health and animal health impacts of the Danish policy restricting the use of antimicrobial growth promoters will be examined. Finally, the participant will be introduced to a producer education and awareness program describing principles and guidelines for the responsible use of antibiotics in pork production. All three of these topics are relevant to the topic of evidence-based policy since they entail the processes of systematically finding, appraising and using contemporaneous findings as the basis for decisions.
