In recent years, the undergraduate public health curriculum has seen dramatic improvements nationwide. In 2003-04, the Johns Hopkins University's Krieger School of Arts and Sciences was one of the first to found a student-run undergraduate public health journal in print. One year later, the outcomes of this undertaking have been remarkable. The journal, entitled EPIDEMIC PROPORTIONS, presents Johns Hopkins undergraduates 1) a literary forum through which to present and discuss their work within the field of public health, 2) the chance to learn from the work and insights of faculty and students of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, including Dean Alfred Sommer, and 3) an opportunity for students to take part in the publication process, from writing, to editing, to layout and publishing. In the same year that the school's Public Health Studies B.A. program produced the second-most graduates of the school, EPIDEMIC PROPORTIONS not only helped to bring the undergraduate public health community together, but also established a vital link with the faculty and students of the graduate public health community. Introducing a student-run public health journal to complement the undergraduate public health curriculum and enhance the undergraduate learning experience should be an improvement considered by university administrators and public health professionals nationwide.
