The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Alabama Department of Public Health are collaborating to develop detailed profiles of Alabama communities most at risk for cancer. NCI's profiles have been successfully applied to target market cancer prevention messages nationally through the NCI Cancer Information Service (CIS.) Alabama is the first state in the U.S. to use NCI's methodology and resources, along with state tumor registry data, to target communications and outreach to at risk populations. These efforts focus on improving the overall efficacy and cost-effectiveness of cancer prevention messages targeting underserved communities. Seven years of data (1996-2002) from the Alabama Statewide Cancer Registry have been geo-coded and analyzed to characterize trends in incidence. The data was then coded into NCI's cancer profiling methodology, the Consumer Health Profile project (CHP), for further examination. The use of geo-demographic, health status, and utilization data allows us to understand the demographic, access and behavioral aspects of prevention and treatment. Additionally, lifestyle segmentation of this dataset facilitates targeted outreach to communities based on lifestyle variables such as media preferences, consumer behavior, and the manner in which they choose to access information. The data is also appropriate for evaluating ongoing community-based cancer programs.
