Abstract #111463

Reducing the burden of diabetes on Hispanics through the Juntos Contra la Diabetes (JCD) project

Eliana T. Loveluck, MSW, Center for Consumers, The National Alliance for Hispanic Health, 1501 16th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036, 202 797-4340, eloveluck@hispanichealth.org

Hispanics are more likely than the general population to develop diabetes, and they also have a higher incidence of diabetes complications than non-Hispanic whites. Additionally, about half of Hispanics with diabetes remain undiagnosed. Overall, Hispanics are 1.9 times more likely than whites to have type 2 diabetes.i Among Hispanics 50 years of age and older, it is estimated that between 25-30% have either diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes.ii The Juntos Contra la Diabetes/United Against Diabetes (JCD) project was developed by the National Alliance for Hispanic Health (the Alliance) to address the severe and unequal burden of diabetes in Hispanic communities in the United States through outreach and education activities implemented in collaboration with community and national partners. JCD is funded through CDC's National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP).

This session will provide data on Hispanics and diabetes, and will put into context the critical need to reach this population with diabetes prevention and management education. In addition, the session will include an overview of the strategies used by the JCD project to reach Hispanics on the subject of diabetes. Both national and local activities are being conducted to reach Hispanics on diabetes, from national-level radio and television programs to extensive implementation efforts at five community-based organizations (CBOs) in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and Phoenix. These CBOs utilize strategies that uniquely fit their situations and populations, including promotoras outreach, formation of local diabetes coalitions, and provider and consumer trainings using the JCD Diabetes Self-Management Curriculum.
