Objective: To explore whether testing positive for HR-HPV, a sexually transmitted infection which can lead to cervical cancer, is associated with women's subsequent use of condoms.

Methods: 181 women tested (Hybrid Capture II, Digene) for HR-HPV (103 positive, 78 negative) post ASCUS Pap, completed a computerized interview. Participants were asked questions concerning sexual history (age at first vaginal intercourse, number of past sexual partners, STD history), condom use and marital status. A three-point Likert scale ranging from “1= all or most of the time” to “3=rarely or none of the time was” used to measure condom use post HR-HPV diagnosis. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to predict condom use.

Results: About 22.1% of the women reported using condoms “all or most of the time”, 12.7% reported “occasionally or some of the time” use and 56.4% reported “rarely or none of the time” use; 8.8% reported no vaginal sex. HR-HPV positive women reported a higher frequency of condom use during vaginal intercourse than HR-HPV negative women (p=.006). Women who were married or living with a partner reported a lower frequency of condom use than single, separated or divorced women. Other sexual history variables were not related to condom use.

Conclusions: In the period after learning HR-HPV test results, HR-HPV positive women report more condom use during vaginal intercourse. This change occurred whether or not the women were living with a partner.
