In the past 20 years, oncogenic (also called high-risk) types of HPV have been linked to cervical cancer. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S. with about 5.5 million people acquiring genital HPV infection each year. A smaller number (about 10,000) of women who have high-risk types of HPV develop cervical cancer in the U.S. Although HPV is the main causative agent for cervical cancer, little is known about the impact of diagnosis and educational, emotional, and medical needs of women who test positive for HPV. The presentations in this session will provide a basic overview of HPV, information on vaccine acceptability among women, effects of HPV on condom use, and effects of HPV diagnosis.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the session, the participant will be able to (1) provide basic facts on human papillomavirus (HPV); (2) describe the relationship between oncogenic or high-risk types of HPV infection and cervical cancer; (3) discuss emotional and psychosocial effects of HPV positivity; (4) discuss the implications of a potential vaccine; (5) explain knowledge gaps and potential educational solutions; and (6) give an overview of the educational, emotional, and medical needs of women who test positive for HPV.
