The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health hosted the Education Strategy Development Workshop: Public Health in Public Housing—Improving Health, Changing Lives on May 5–6, 2004, in Bethesda, MD. The purpose of the Workshop was to hear from both public health and public housing professionals regarding public health strategies they have found to be effective in public housing communities. The Workshop focused on the health conditions asthma and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and opportunities to improve the health of residents in public housing settings. Workshop panelists provided a picture of the public housing setting and shared their perspectives about best practices, lessons learned, and opportunities for reducing the prevalence of CVD and asthma in public housing. Participants used the information shared during the panel presentations and their collective experiences and knowledge to create scenarios and frameworks that could be used to plan future asthma control and cardiovascular health programs in public housing settings. This session will outline the lessons learned by the workshop's 65 public health and public housing practitioner member group. It will also outline the results of the workshop--four innovative programming frameworks that integrate clinical care and public health education and health promotion to address CVD and asthma in public housing settings.
