The Leadership Institute in Public Health Preparedness is for public health nurses offered by the Emory Center for Public Health Preparedness in collaboration with local health districts within Georgia. The goal of the Institute is to train participants in core public health, leadership, and public health preparedness topics; to prepare participants for new and/or changing leadership roles in their public health practice community; and, to equip them with skills needed to assess their communities' ability to prepare for and respond to public health emergencies. The Institute consists of on-campus sessions and intersession activities - supplemented with an online course site. During 2004, faculty in the Rollins School of Public Health offered the Institute for 19 nursing leaders working in a health district in north Georgia. The overall learning objective was to develop a plan for establishing and implementing a Strategic National Stockpile Dispensing Site in their community. Topics covered included theoretical and practical sides of public health with an emphasis on public health preparedness. All content for the Institute was put into the context of a changing world in which terrorism and other emergency health threats are a reality. The success of the Institute is due to the District's commitment to training their entire cadre of nursing leaders, the collaboration between Institute planners and District leadership in adapting the curriculum to meet District needs, and the establishment of an environment that was conducive to helping participants have ownership of individual projects, work cohesively on a common goal, and bond professionally.
