The Monitoring & Assessment Project (M.A.P.) is an initiative conducted by Tarrant County Public Health to construct a comprehensive community health profile for Tarrant County. Tarrant County is the third largest county in Texas with an estimated population of 1,446,219 in 2001. M.A.P. was supported by a Texas Department of Health Innovation grant awarded to Tarrant County in August of 2001. The purpose is to establish a baseline for accurate, periodic assessments of Tarrant County residents' progress toward health-related objectives. The health indicators selected in this project were based on the Texas Strategic Health Status Indicators (TSHSI) project of the Texas Department of State Health Services. TSHSI seeks to provide comparable regularly updated data on the health status for all Texas counties. These indicators were adapted for Tarrant County and geocoded on a sub-county level using Geographic Information System technology. These health indicators were matched to the Healthy People 2010 benchmarks to assess the health status of Tarrant County residents, as well as compared with Texas and the nation. A total of 56 health indicators were select classified into seven health domains which are community profile, maternal and child health, chronic diseases, infectious disease, environmental health, social and mental health and injury. A broad base of community stakeholders provided input into the selection of health indicators and provided direction to tailor the project to our community's health needs. This presentation will describe the process for health indicator selection, data gathering, analysis and dissemination of results.
