In this session the learner will hear a discussion of a various topics in public health with an epidemiologic perspective. The learner will learn about the emergency department surveillance system in Los Angeles County, population-based surveillance for pediatric influenza related hospitalizations in Connecticut, and the use of GIS to identify disease clusters.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Describe the development of a volume-based emergency department surveillance system. 2. List the different data sources used by the LAC Syndromic surveillance system. 3. Recognize the role that population-based surveillance plays in the evaluation of pediatric vaccination policy. 4. Describe the various psychosocial and environmental factors influencing calcium intake, physical activity and bone health. 5. Describe the process of planning for and implementation of a comprehensive community health status report 6. List ways to improve the detection of psychological distress among physicians and other healthcare providers who treat patients with heart disease. 7. Describe the use and effectiveness of pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) to identify a unique DNA fingerprint pattern for isolates from patients and group patients with similar or identical fingerprint patterns into clusters to determine the common source of infection. 8. Describe the differences between Zip Code Tabulation Areas and United States Postal Service Zip Codes.
