Making Health a Priority in Environmental Protection – An Economic Perspective

Making Health a Priority in Environmental Protection presents innovative work in law, health advocacy, and economic development that promote health in environmental policies and decision-making.

Economic Development Dan Hutch will provide information on the importance of public health professionals becoming involved in economic development decision-making on local, state, and national levels. Mr. Hutch will present recent initiatives that EPA is promoting to ensure that economic development meets public health and environmental goals. These initiatives recognize the subtle and not so subtle ways that development, such as regulated manufacturing facilities, transportation infrastructure, sewer systems, and others, can negatively affect public health and diminish quality of life.

Mr. Hutch will discuss the economic rationales for sustainable development that creates public health and environmental benefits. Mr. Hutch will make recommendations on how public health professionals can get involved to ensure public health objectives are met by economic policies and development projects.
