Essex County, like New Jersey's other 20 counties, has formed a countywide cancer coalition to implement the NJ Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan (NJ CCCP) and to prioritize cancer control efforts at the local level. Partnerships with diverse stakeholders are the foundation of the Essex County Cancer Coalition (ECCC). The C/NA in Essex County has been guiding ECCC cancer control and prevention efforts, by identifying cancer issues that had not been previously recognized as priorities (e.g., high incidence/ mortality rates for oral and prostate cancers in the county compared to the state, and racial disparities in these rates).
The ECCC has engaged new members and strengthened relationships with community organizations and local public health agencies. The cultural, ethnic, social, professional and geographic diversity of ECCC members enables successful collaboration and sharing of resources and knowledge covering a broad range of cancer issues from clinical, community, and personal perspectives. This diversity is also essential to addressing the diverse needs within the county due to differences in age, racial and ethnic composition, income, poverty, and education levels between inner-city and suburban areas.
The ECCC's organization, its partnerships and activities, obstacles to implementation, and means of communication (including the newly developed web site www.umdnj.edu/esscaweb/ which includes a calendar of events) will be described. A clearly defined organizational structure, recruitment and sustaining membership, and stakeholder input and consensus for the mission and direction of the Coalition are imperative to foster cooperation among distinct organizations and effective local implementation of cancer control activities.
