Problem: Each year, the New Mexico Public Health Association (NMPHA) saw fewer people getting involved in its advocacy efforts. Members expressed that they did not have the skills or the time to become involved in the legislative process. Methods: NMPHA determined that a concerted effort to involve more people in our legislative efforts was needed. Members and other interested individuals told us that they wanted tools to feel more comfortable with advocacy. NMPHA began a series of trainings on policy advocacy and media advocacy. In addition, the affiliate hosted a half-day Health Policy Legislative Forum to facilitate sharing of legislative interests among organizations working on health-related issues prior to the 2005 Legislative Session. Results: NMPHA has trained over 150 people in advocacy in the past three years. The Legislative Forum was a huge success, which drew more than 100 attendees from across the state. Evaluations from all events were quite positive – participants enjoyed the material presented as well as the opportunity to network and share information. Plans are underway for additional trainings as well as another Forum. Conclusion: In order to generate interest in an affiliate's policy issues, it is critical to give members and other collaborators the tools they need to feel comfortable in taking action. In addition, it is critical for like-minded advocates to share information and plans for legislative action. Through basic training and sharing of information, advocates will feel supported and greater legislative success can be achieved.
