In this session, the learner will hear about different methods for counting populations which are historically hard to count. The capture-recapture method will be discussed and used to estimate the prevalence of multiple sclerosis. A model for determining the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders will also be discussed.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) will be able to: 1. Describe three sampling techniques for the enumeration of hard-to-reach populations 2. Discuss elements of a model surveillance case definition for the autism spectrum disorders 3. Develop an understanding of the capture-recapture method, its data requirements, steps, strengths and limitations. 4.understand the possible causes of nonparticipation in epidemiologic studies 5. Assess the feasibility of sampling hidden populations Evaluate methodologies: respondent driven sampling and targeted sampling in recruiting injection drug users Identify the pros and cons of sampling implementation in three MSAs
