Collaborations among a diverse group of non-profit organizations including, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, the National Association of County and City Health Officials, the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA), the Environmental Council of the States, and Physicians for Social Responsibility have established an Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) network in order to enhance capacity to conduct EPHT by conducting needs assessments and disseminating information among public health professions and healthcare providers. In this session, we will hear about the network’s activities including results from surveys to understand states’ capacity to undertake environmental health surveillance including asthma; the use of facilitated discussions as a means to engage and promote EPHT among public health practitioners; findings from a national EPHT education campaign; educational initiatives among health care providers; and an assessment of how to incorporate tracking into community-based health related organizations. We will also hear from researchers from Johns Hopkins University regarding number of pilot projects undertaken to explore and enhance the use of environmental public health indicators for tracking purposes.
Learning Objectives: Participants will (1) describe the role of the National Partners in the development of the EPHT Network; (2) understand public and professional awareness of EPHT; (3) articulate the role of the National Partners as educators and policy advocates; and 4) demonstrate how environmental public health indicators can be used to link exposures with health outcomes.
