The Science and Continuous Challenges of Fluoridation: 60 Years Later
Community water fluoridation was first implemented sixty years ago and has been demonstrated by hundreds of studies to be safe, effective, economical and practical. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called fluoridation one of the ten great public health achievements of the 20th century. In spite of this more than a 100 million Americans do not live in fluoridated communities and fluoridation continues to be a controversy in some communities in spite of the overwhelming evidence. The national dental bill is over $ 74 billion a year and many Americans suffer unnecessarily because they do not have the health and economic benefits of this public health measure. This panel will discuss the public health and political aspects of fluoridation from different perspectives and how we can move this cost-effective public health measure ahead. The lessons learned from this panel can be utilized for other public health programs where evidence alone is not enough for community acceptance.
Learning Objectives: 1. Describe the current status and continued need for fluoridation in the United States. 2. Describe the strength of the evidence in support of this public health measure. 3. Describe strategies to promote fluoridation on the national, state, and local level working with the community, government, foundations and organized dentistry.
