A Voice at Work for Health Care Workers
Unions can help physicians, nurses and other health care workers to function professionally. This session will discuss the role of unions in helping phyicians, nurses and others establish and maintain high standards of patient care. This includes providing a strong and effective voice for professionals in the effort to prevent abuses in correcting inequities in the delivery of medical services; contract provisions which give them a say in staffing levels, restrict the use of mandatory overtime, eliminate shift rotation and provide health and safety guarantees. The role of unions in legislative and regulatory initiatives of concern to health care workers will be discussed. The session will include a focus on professional development, including contract provisions which establish career ladders, tuition reimbursement, certification differentials, and more.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, participants will be able to: 1) Analyze and discuss the ways in which contract negotiations and union contracts can improve the quality of patient care. 2) Describe and discuss the role of unions and union contracts in improving the wages, benefits, and working conditions of nurses, physicians and other health care workers. 3) Describe and discuss the relationship between health care worker safety, patient safety, and health care worker shortages. 4) Outline one union's multifaceted campaign to improve health and safety conditions for its members. 5) Analyze and discuss unions role in promoting professional development and training. 6) Analyze and discuss the role of unions in legislative and regulatory issues of concern to nurses, physicians and other health care workers. 7) Describe and discuss the issues facing nursing faculty in consolidated and community colleges and union actions to address these concerns. 8)Describe and discuss the role of unions as a "Third Party Messenger" when representing private practice physicians in their dealings with insurance carriers.
