There has been much controversy about the intrusion of ideology and politics into the science of HIV prevention in the last several years. Our goal in this session is to present some of the relevant issues in this debate, and move forward toward suggesting how we can work around the politics to do the best HIV prevention science possible. The first paper discusses the broad issues; the second paper discusses an important policy debate related directly to the implementation of science (who should HIV prevention interventionists be); the third paper focuses on one of the most controversial issues where politics, religion, and ideology have intruded the most: abstinence vs. comprehensive sex education.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, participants will be able to: 1) Describe current threats to the peer review process and potential options for researchers to protect their research. 2) Identify areas and modes of research to test controversial health issues.
