Evidence for Public Health Approaches to Cancer Screening Promotion: Translating Research Into Practice (Update on Health Services Research)
This session will provide an overview of factors that influence the uptake of cancer screening tests and examines two innovative, large-scale ongoing evidence-based interventions that effectively promote their use. The overview paper in this session examines reasons for disparities in screening uptake. Increasing medical care costs and diminishing public resources make innovative evidence-based interventions to promote cancer screening and continuity of care among safety-net providers and in medically underserved communities especially urgent now. The second paper in this session will describe the Cancer Health Disparities Collaborative, an intervention to promote screening and continuity of care among safety-net providers. This program uses evaluation and feedback to improve cancer screening and follow-up among community health centers that serve poor, minority, and other underserved populations. The third presentation in this session will discuss the Pathfinders study. The study examined whether a single strategy could target multiple ethnicities tailored to participants cultural and individual characteristics. Evidence will be presented to show that tailored strategies with varying focal points is feasible and important for promotion of evidence-based practice.
