Ruth Roemer was a pioneer in public health law who led efforts to reduce tobacco use and expand women’s reproductive rights. She was co-editor of the world’s first public health treaty—the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control—which has been signed by 168 countries and entered into force in 2003. Professor Roemer taught at the UCLA School of Public Health for more than 40 years and was the 1988 President of APHA. George Silver was one of the pillars of “social medicine” in the United States from his 15-years work as Director of the Division of Social Medicine at Montefiore Hospital to his service starting in 1965 as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, where he was one of the architects of Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty. In 1969, he was named Professor of Public Health at Yale’s School of Public Health, where he was known as an outstanding teacher. The Award for Outstanding Scholarship in the History of Public Health will be presented to Sydney Halpern, PhD, for her book – Lesser Harms: The Morality of Risk in Medical Research. | |||
