| The purpose of this session is to focus on use of effective research and theoretical foundations for studying and improving the health of school age children. The first presenter investigated middle school students’ stage of change for three behaviors related to obesity prevention. Understanding the relationships of the behaviors, and the differences in students’ readiness to engage in them, is essential for developing effective prevention programs. The second presenter investigated the social and cultural depictions of U.S. population groups in health and social studies texts. The presentation is developed to challenge the health and social educators to critically examine course materials for their presumed evidence that curriculum discourses present the truth, rather than see these materials for its social and cultural biases. The third presenter studied the association of setting (home vs. school) and mode (paper and pencil vs. computer) on self-reported risk behaviors. The results have important implications for needs assessments and other youth surveys. The fourth presenter investigated aspirational image categories among adolescents. This study suggests that aspirations hold promise for motivating change of health behaviors among adolescents. | |||
| Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session the participants will be able to: 1. Discuss the association between certain demographic variables and stage of change for those behaviors 2. Describe ways in which historical curriculum analysis can aid modern day health or social educators to question current assumptions in curricula. 3. Discuss the impact of survey setting and mode on reporting of risk behaviors among adolescents. 4. Identify aspirational image categories among demographic subgroups and their use for predicting certain health behaviors. | |||
