Session: Youth Sexual Health Programs
5193.0: Wednesday, December 14, 2005: 2:30 PM-4:00 PM
Oral
Youth Sexual Health Programs
This session presents four prevention programs related to youth sexual health. Linking Lives is a school-based prevention program for parents of middle school students. An integrated micro-level theory of adolescent sexual risk behavior guided the development of this program. All model components tests were useful in understanding adolescents’ intentions to engage in sexual behavior. Youth First is a comprehensive sexuality education/youth development program for pre-adolescents delivered in partnership with Planned Parenthood and elementary and middle schools. A longitudinal evaluation shows the sexuality curriculum has been proven effective and has increased knowledge, attitudes and antecedents to positive sexual behaviors. The future Selves Program is a 60 hour intervention delivered over three years to students in rural schools. It is an adolescent pregnancy prevention program that emphasized skill development and school achievement. Behavioral and attitudinal data support the use of a youth development approach for intervention in school setting for adolescent pregnancy prevention. StarLO is an abstinence education program that embeds theatre performances within a classroom-based curriculum, utilizing peer educator/actors. Evaluation of the program showed a positive impact on participants knowledge and attitudes related to abstinence.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session the participants will be able to: 1. List components of a comprehensive sexuality education program. 2. Assess the components of the unified theory underlying the development of a school-based HIV prevention program 3. Recognize the associations between multiple antecedents and the initiation of coitus 4. Identify the components that make theatre education a unique and effective technique for prevention
