The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) convened an expert panel to define applied epidemiology competencies for mid- to senior-level governmental public health epidemiologists. The competencies were derived from the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice competency framework for public health practice, and refined through comparisons with relevant existing competency sets and job descriptions and analysis by experienced epidemiologists and competency experts. The resulting competencies reflect those needed for the effective practice of epidemiology in the governmental public health setting. The completed applied epidemiology competency set is now available for use by governmental agencies and academic centers. CDC and CSTE anticipate that the competencies will be used as the basis of instructional competencies for the training of governmental epidemiologists, and as the framework for developing position descriptions, work expectations, and job announcements for epidemiologists practicing in public health agencies. This session will describe the competency development process, including a multi-level validation process, and provide examples demonstrating how the competencies may be used.
Learning Objectives: At the end of the session participants will be able to: 1) define workforce and instructional competencies; 2) describe a comprehensive process for developing workforce and instructional competencies; 3) describe the validation process of the new applied epidemiology competency set; and 4) articulate potential applications for the applied epidemiology competencies within their work setting.
