Managing infectious disease and reducing barriers to care and prevention are core elements of a public health strategy. The presentations in this session represent results from studies on infectious disease interventions at both the community and national level, including disease burden, socioeconomic conditions, and policy-making mechanisms as critical determinants of an infectious disease program. Specifically, the presentations will discuss (1) ethnographic findings from a multi-phase study of tuberculosis-related stigma in Haitian populations, making comparisons between patients, health care providers, and community residents; (2) the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, emphasizing challenges encountered by the Stop the Transmission of Polio (STOP) team in Ethiopia; (3) control measures sponsored by Marathon Oil in partnership with the government of Equatorial Guinea to control malaria and anemia on Bioko Island; (4) attitudes toward the implementation of widespread quarantine in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and the United States, and (5) the role of insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) in the Roll Back Malaria and other global and national initiatives in reducing malaria transmission, premature births, and child mortality, and the remaining challenges in the intervention.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant will be able to (1) understand evidence-based public health and its utilization regarding infectious disease prevention and control; (2) examine the relationship between attitudes, behavior, and cultural practices and infectious disease management, and (3) consider the challenges associated with infectious disease control in resource-constrained settings.
