University-community collaborative to improve the quality of life of women with breast cancer

Paige Smith, PhD, Donna Duffy, MS, and Treva Curtis, MS. Center for Women's Health and Wellness, UNC Greensboro, PO Box 26170, 401 HHP Building, Greensboro, NC 27402, 336.334.4735, phsmith@uncg.edu

Adjusting to both the diagnosis of breast cancer and to life as a survivor is complex. Women with breast cancer have a great need for understandable and accurate information about the disease and treatment options and socioemotional support from both the health care team and close family or social network members. One important part of treatment and recovery is becoming aware of and linked up with resources that can help meet the many needs newly diagnosed and recovering women have. In this paper we describe a university-community collaborative process with the initial objectives of : assessing community resources; developing a patient education manual for all newly diagnosed women that includes a resource guide; and implementing a peer mentoring program and resource room for survivors. We will describe the collaborative, local funding for the projects, the process we used to assess and disseminate information about community resources (via the resource guide and a community ‘exposition'), and the process of designing, implementing and evaluating a mentoring program that seeks to reach into our community's diverse immigrant population
