In this study, structural equation modeling was employed to examine the effects of an intervention on the relationships between self-regulation, self-efficacy, management strategies, and quality of life among caregivers of children with asthma over time. Data from the randomized control trial of the Partnership to Control Asthma in Public Schools Study, in 14 Detroit, Michigan elementary schools, was collected over a five-year period (1997-2001). Caregiver data was collected at three time points: Baseline (pre-intervention), follow-up 1 (6 months post-intervention), and follow-up 2 (12 months post-intervention). We hypothesized that self-regulation would have an impact on self-efficacy and management strategies; self-efficacy at baseline would positively influence management strategies at first follow-up; self-efficacy at first follow-up would positively affect management strategies and positively influence self-efficacy at first follow-up; and that participation in the intervention would positively impact management strategies and self-regulation. The model did support the effectiveness (p=.05) of self-regulation on self-efficacy and management strategies, as well as the treatment influence on self-regulation at follow-up 2. The remaining hypotheses were not found to be statistically significant in the model. Overall, the goodness of fit of our model χ2 (158, N = 309), normal fit index = .96, non-normed fit index = .89, comparative fit index = .96, RMSEA = .199 (CI = .171, .226) is supportive of the model of asthma management.
