Recognizing the importance of community partnerships to address the health disparities of minority and underserved communities through outreach, research, and training initiatives, the NIH's National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities has funded more than 23 Project EXPORT (Excellence in Partnerships for Outreach, Research, and Training) Centers across the country. In 2003, the NYU Center for the Study of Asian American Health (CSAAH) became a designated Project EXPORT Center and is a unique national center devoted to the health disparities and research training needs of the Asian American community. CSAAH is a comprehensive network of more than 40 community based organizations (CBOs), academic medical centers and health care organizations. CSAAH has been dedicated to sustaining partnerships and developing new linkages with CBOs and health care institutions. CSAAH activities have included: (1) bringing together various community sectors for planning, learning and networking, (2) developing health coalitions and research initiatives in the South Asian, Filipino, Vietnamese and Korean communities, (3) providing technical assistance, training, support and visibility to CBOs and health care institutions through conferences, seminars and workshops, and (4) collaborating on community-based participatory research grants with community partners. Through its partnerships, CSAAH has established itself as a resource for developing community-based research and culturally-appropriate health education programs and a clearinghouse of health resources for the various Asian ethnic communities. The presentation will share lessons learned in developing partnerships to address health issues in the Asian American community and the potential to replicate our outreach efforts in other minority communities.
