Equipping the medically underserved with cancer information and access to quality care is a critical human rights effort. They are a population experiencing a disproportionate cancer burden, and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) recognizes the need to educate them about all cancer treatment and prevention options—including clinical trials. As a Federal agency, NCI often faces challenges in reaching the hard-to-reach with cancer information. One strategy is to collaborate with partner organizations that have increased access to these groups through established channels. This presentation will describe how NCI implemented a national partnership model, over a 3-year period, to develop, disseminate, and evaluate the “Clinical Trials Education Program”—a series of educational resources designed to increase awareness and understanding of clinical trials. NCI recruited over 170 health professional, advocacy, patient service, and health care organizations to disseminate the program nationwide. Partners had expanded access to over 20 educational resources targeted to different audiences; technical assistance from NCI to implement outreach and trainings; and evaluation tools to capture outcomes. Through this dissemination effort, NCI and its partners reached over 1 million patients, health professionals, advocates, and the public with clinical trials information. Evaluation data indicated that 87% of partners used the education resources in their programs; 100% promoted the resources; and 95% were satisfied with NCI's clinical trials program. This presentation will highlight additional evaluation data, as well as the successes and unique challenges in implementing this partnership approach on a national level.
