Academic Pharmacy and Public Health: Health Promotion Opportunities Through Interprofessional Linkages

William G. Lang, MPH, American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, 1426 Prince Street, Alexandria, VA 22314, 703 739 2330 x1038, wlang@aacp.org

The educational outcomes established for US colleges and schools of pharmacy through the Center for the Advancement of Pharmaceutical Education (CAPE) are applied across three specific domains: pharmaceutical care, systems management, and public health. As they develop and assess their public health outcomes, colleges and schools of pharmacy are creating community-campus and interprofessional linkages that increase the reach of health promotion and disease prevention messages to general and specific populations.

Through shared faculty positions, interprofessional experiential learning opportunities, interprofessional research across academic units and schools as well as with community-based organizations, pharmacy students and educators are able to improve adherence, implement population-based messages, engage in epidemiologic research, and collaborate with public health administrators, educators, and community health workers to increase the reach and intensity of health promotion and disease prevention messages.

A panel of pharmacy educators will present the pharmacy educational outcomes, models of current activity related to the broad mission of higher education- teaching, research, and service. Session attendees will learn the necessary steps they can take to develop similar programs at their community or academic organization.
