This panel will examine the newly launched HCAHPS survey, the first national, standardized, publicly reported survey of patients' perspectives of their hospital care. HCAHPS unites patient centered care with public reporting of hospital quality, and recently enacted legislation promises to further heighten interest in the implementation and results of the survey.

Learning Objectives:

• This panel will be comprised of four papers on the HCAHPS survey of hospital patients perspectives of their care. Participants in this session will understand how the survey was developed, what was learned during its "dry run", the role that physicians may play as conduits of HCAHPS information, and how HCAHPS scores will be publicly reported.
