WSTDtv: Award-winning multimedia HIV/STD curriculum for middle schools

Richard C. Goldsworthy, BA, MSEd, Academic Edge, Inc., PO Box 5307, Bloomington, IN 47407-5307, 8123339543, rick@academicedge.com

WSTDtv: a multimedia-enhanced HIV/STD curriculum will be demonstrated, evaluation studies will be described, and free trial copies distributed.

Issue: Sexually active adolescents have the highest rates of STD of any age group. The project sought to develop prototype HIV/STD awareness and risk reduction classroom activities, interactive modules, and lesson plans and to evaluate the efficacy and usability of the resulting materials in a preliminary field trial.

Description: WSTDtv helps tweens and teens learn about HIV/STD; ways to handle the pressures and influences in their daily lives; the relationship of HIV/STD to other aspects of their lives; and the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to reduce their level of risk. Developed with support from the National Institutes of Health, WSTDtv has been praised by teachers and HIV/STD prevention experts for its appropriateness, usefulness, and engagement, and it is the recipient of BESSIE, All-Star, and Parent's Choice awards as well as a CODiE award finalist.

Lessons Learned: A field trial evaluation of WSTDtv found that middle school age learners who used the program demonstrated a significant increase in knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases and showed a marked improvement in certain risk-reduction attitudes, such as recognizing and resisting peer and media pressures toward sexuality. Learners also found the media to be engaging and realistic.

Recommendations: Future efforts should incorporate more critical-thinking and skills-building oriented activities, transition toward web-based delivery while remaining mindful of remaining access limitations in many schools, and consider opportunities to empower teacher and learner self-tailoring of materials and media.
