Pacific Islanders are disproportionately affected by high rates of cancer, with screening, access to care; early diagnosis, treatment adherence, and participation in clinical trials all typically low. To reduce these disparities, university based cancer researchers will collaborate with Pacific Islander communities (Native Hawaiian, Samoan, Chamorro, Tongan, and Marshallese) to reduce health service barriers to cancer control by reducing fears, stigmas, myths and other barriers which prevent these populations from appropriately accessing cancer diagnosis and treatment services. This study is unique in that it provides a network analytic assessment of the structure of five university cancer research communities and how they currently interact with diverse Pacific Islander community groups in Southern California. Data reveal the structure of interaction and potential pathways that might be bridged to create more effective cancer research communications to Pacific Islander groups. In addition, the study serves as a model for community participatory health behavior research with other understudied and underserved populations.
