Community Networks to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities through Education, Research and Training: Program and Evaluation Strategies
This panel will present evaluation strategies and preliminary findings from the Community Networks Program to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities through Education, Research and Training (CNP). The CNP is a 5-year program funded through the National Cancer Institute’s Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD). Twenty-five cooperative agreements were awarded to institutions across the United States to implement community-based activities to address cancer health disparities among racial and ethnic minority and underserved populations. The CNP aims to develop, implement, and evaluate strategies to ensure the rights of all populations to adequate education, screening, and treatment for cancer. The primary goals of the CNP are to significantly increase access to and utilization of beneficial cancer interventions in communities with cancer health disparities, and to provide a cadre of well-trained researchers who will continue to reduce disparities in communities. All CNP activities are framed by the community-based participatory research approach. Each CNP grantee establishes partnerships and collaborates closely with community-based organizations to provide culturally-appropriate clinical and non-clinical services to meet the goals of the program. A national evaluator (CSR, Incorporated) is conducting a cross-site evaluation to track implementation of the program and assess overall program effectiveness. The national evaluation utilizes community-based participatory research methodologies, collaborating with all 25 grantees in the development and implementation of the evaluation and the dissemination of its results.
Learning Objectives: 1) Introduction and overview: a) The panel organizer/moderator will briefly describe the goals of the panel and introduce panel participants. b) CNP overview: CRCHD staff will provide an overview of the CNP. 2) National evaluation: National evaluation staff will present the framework and methodological approaches for the national evaluation, as well as preliminary findings. 3) Individual CNP presentations: Presenters from different CNPs working with different populations in different regions of the nation will present their program and evaluation strategies.
