How Community Empowerment Leads to Improved Access to Fruits, Vegetables, and Physical Activity in Low-income California Communities

The California 5 a Day Campaign, which is a program within the California Nutrition Network for Healthy, Active Families, is working to promote the establishment of environments that support fruit and vegetable consumption and physical activity among low-income adults and children in California. During this presentation, participants will learn how the 5 a Day Campaign has worked with low-income Californians, using community empowerment principles, to improve access to fresh, affordable fruits and vegetables and safe places for physical activity. Specific case examples will be shared including how community groups and low-income residents worked together to establish and sustain a church-based farmers' market and grocery store in East Oakland, CA; how community groups banded together to establish bicycle lanes in Pasadena, CA; how a Chief Executive Officer of a Los Angeles-based garment manufacturing company worked with low-wage workers to create and maintain a healthy workplace environment; and how low-income residents in San Diego, CA influenced developers to build safe walking routes to a supermarket that sells affordable, quality fruits and vegetables. The process of each case example will be featured, as well as a description of the near- and longer-term outcomes.
