Successful Business Strategies to Prevent Heart Disease and Stroke Toolkit

Objective: To develop a toolkit that state health departments and others can use to educate and influence employers to purchase health benefits and services and establish comprehensive worksite interventions to prevent heart disease and stroke among employees.

Methods: Methods used to develop the Toolkit include: establishing a national advisory panel, conducting a literature review, identifying promising practices and key business/cost messages to prevent heart disease and stroke, pilot-testing, and training.

Results: The Toolkit includes: (1) A Toolkit Guide with methods to reach business leaders, (2) A Six-Step Guide for Employers that includes a business case for investing in comprehensive programs and services to prevent heart disease and stroke, (3) Evaluating Health Plan Benefits and Services Checklist that helps employers negotiate a health benefits package/program that fits their workforce, (4) Promising Practices that summarizes selected programs in worksite and health care settings showing positives outcomes for heart disease and stroke prevention, (5) A PowerPoint presentation that can be used with business groups, (6) Glossary that provides definitions and business terms, and (7) Additional Resources and Articles that support the business case for heart disease and stroke prevention. States Health Departments are being trained to use the Toolkit with employer groups.

Conclusions: The Toolkit was developed for states to promote coverage for preventive services and comprehensive policy and system changes to prevent heart disease and stroke. Several states have established partnerships with business coalitions and have used the Toolkit as a planning tool in their efforts to reach business leaders.
