Aging of Baby Boomers: Translating Research into Action

Disproportional aging of the US “baby-boomer” population---75 million strong---will change future healthcare delivery and impact Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. More educated than previous generations and empowered by the available health information, this population faces a growing prevalence of obesity and chronic disease, suggesting that knowledge and empowerment don't necessarily translate into health actions and improved health status.

Individuals approaching or who have reached their 50th birthday who adopt healthy behaviors may delay disease onset and disability by approximately 5 years, profoundly impacting quality of life and healthcare costs. Positive lifestyle practices that foster successful aging and longevity must include pursuit of mental challenges, social involvement and financial security, all of which in combination may postpone health decline.

To better understand the socioeconomic and health needs of this generation, a survey was mailed to 2,772 individuals ages 40-59 years to identify age-specific concerns and their impact on current health practices. While 58% reported having the necessary tools to manage their health, 77% worry about their physical health; 71% do not adhere to exercise recommendations, 70% need to lose weight, only 47% reported their overall health as very good or excellent, 58% worry about their financial future and 45% lack tools for financial or retirement planning. Despite available tools and support, health risks, suboptimal health, and contributing financial concerns persist.

Methods and results will be presented in conjunction with how findings are being applied to develop a comprehensive and engaging health promotion and wellness program for this population.
