OBJECTIVES: To assess health needs among LGBT Arizonans, determining effects of orientation and gender identity on health decisions and quality of care, develop strategies for effective chronic disease prevention and plan for programs and policies to improve health outcomes of LGBT people in Arizona. METHODS: Quantitative data derived from surveys completed by 657 lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender Arizona residents, ages 14 to 74 (m=38.2) at community events in October, 2005. Qualitative data was derived from 1) focus groups (n=12) in 3 Arizona counties highlighting specific sub-populations; 2) key informant interviews (n=24) with LGBT community leaders and health care professionals: 3) community forums in three targeted regions; and 4) strategic planning sessions in each region including key community members. RESULTS: Survey findings indicate that LGBT Arizonans prioritize fitness/exercise, nutrition, cancer, depression/anxiety and heart disease among their most critical health issues. 54% of respondents had smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime. Focus groups emphasized the need for inclusive medical forms and friendly providers. Health messages that target the LGBT population need to include images and contexts that are LGBT specific. The majority of participants indicated that an LGBT environment is desirable for health behavior enhancement. Key informant interviews, community forums and strategic planning are scheduled in March 2006, results will be included the oral presentation.
