Under way is a major effort to reform federal food and farm policy through the 2007 Farm Bill. This workshop will describe the work of the WK Kellogg Foundation-funded Farm and Food Policy Project and its Healthy Food and Communities Work Group to develop and advocate for alternatives policies in this context. These policy options reflect the intention to incorporate individual and ecological health at the center of the Farm Bill through increased support for community-based food systems. Initiatives to increase access to healthy foods in low income communities, support locally-based agriculture, and augment and reorient federal nutrition programs will be discussed. The expansion of existing USDA programs such as the Community Food Projects and Farmers Market Nutrition Program will be addressed, as will the creation of bold new initiatives. The workshop will cover the political landscape of Farm Bill reform, its prospects, and brief history. Attendees will also gain a knowledge of how to further educate themselves, their constituencies, and policymakers on these issues.
