Health is of crucial importance to people in all walks of life. Factors such as income, education, occupation environment and access to services impact health status. While disparities seen in health outcomes, care and access (among others) do not represent new issue; efforts to eliminate disparities have intensified. As part of the overall approach to reducing these disparities, the Health and Wellness team of the Nashville R.E.A.C.H. 2010 coalition a Center for Disease Control funded project in North Nashville uses variety of interventions to help galvanize the community into healthy lifestyle changes. The Nashville R.E.A.C.H. 2010 has taken on the challenge of empowering the North Nashville community with healthy cooking tools by developing "A Taste of Health". We have collected traditional recipes and alter them to reduce saturated fat, sugar and salt creating a healthy alternative using herbs and spices. In collaboration with The Nashville Farmers Market, we demonstrated healthy meals for community members to taste. The cookbook will provide the community with tools that they have created as a guide for preparing healthy, great tasting meals for all family members to enjoy. This will also help individuals, families, churches and neighborhood associations take an active interest in their health and the improvement thereof. It will also help community participants learn new cooking styles, reducing stereotypes that healthier foods are less distinctive in taste and appearance. Ultimately, this will lead to assisting families, congregations, and neighborhood associations become supportive networks for individual's self management of care for chronic diseases.
