McDonald, DrPH, MPH, MA, National Center for Infectious Diseases, Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, 1600 Clifton Road NE, Mailstop D-62, Atlanta, GA 30333.

The purpose of this presentation is to explore current knowledge regarding infectious disease disparities among adolescents. The overview is based on an extensive literature review and through an examination of various Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) resources. Infectious diseases common in adolescents include: gonorrhea, chlamydia, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, genital herpes, pertussis, measles, and tuberculosis. By becoming more knowledgeable about these diseases, we can better equip adolescents and their supporters with the behavioral skills needed to decrease prevalence and better address disparities, especially as they affect racial and ethnic minority populations. This presentation will focus on research on the prevalence and risk factors associated with infectious disease disparities among adolescents and the disparate health impacts in different minority populations. It will further examine effective interventions aimed at reducing infectious disease rates among adolescents, including vaccination recommendations.
