The extent of health disparities across the United States and, to a lesser degree, in Nevada, has been widely documented. Health educators in addition to other public health professionals have been extensively involved in the development, implementation, and evaluation of interventions that have and will target these disparities. While health professionals are an integral part of addressing these disparities through these interventions, limited information exists regarding these professionals' perceptions of health disparities as defined by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). To address this information gap, nearly forty interviews were conducted with health professionals from varying fields around the state of Nevada. Each interview was conducted by a trained interviewer using a standardized guide and tape recorded. The tape recordings from each interview were used to supplement notes that were taken during the interview. Notes from the interview were then examined to determine themes that emerged or were recurring across all interviews and within interviews from persons working in the same areas. This presentation will provide an overview of the project and the interviews that were conducted. Most of the interview participants varied in their perceptions of the impact of discrimination on as well as the role of system factors in health disparities. Results of the project, both expected and unexpected, will be discussed. The presentation will conclude with a review and outline of the research agenda relative to health disparities is being developed for Nevada.
