Funding for prevention: Successful strategies for increasing public health in state budgets

Advocacy by the Massachusetts Public Health Association and its allies resulted in an $18.7 million increase in the FY06 Department of Public Health budget over the previous year. The strategies and tactics utilized by MPHA can be adapted and replicated in other states. These include coalition-building, media, public education, grassroots organizing, member mobilization, and legislative advocacy. Participants will learn how to define the elements of a successful budget advocacy campaign, assess appropriate strategies and tactics, and develop a comprehensive budget advocacy plan.
