Background: The geographic distribution of prostate cancer incidence in Connecticut and Massachusetts residents has not previously been evaluated by race. Methods: The Connecticut Tumor Registry and Massachusetts Cancer Registry provided records on the incidence of 11,460 invasive prostate cancer cases of black and white males from Connecticut and 19,416 from Massachusetts. A spatial scan statistic was used to detect and test significance of the geographic variation among 29,116 white males and 1760 black male prostate cancer incident cases. Results: The analysis of white males found high clusters of prostate cancer incidence in eastern Massachusetts and south-western Connecticut and low clusters in eastern Massachusetts and covering most of Connecticut and western Massachusetts. Different clusters of high prostate cancer incidence of black males, however there was a similar low cluster in eastern Massachusetts. Conclusions: The differences between the geographic distribution of the incidence of invasive prostate cancer in Connecticut and Massachusetts residents are apparent. This study is evidence for the need for the examination of prostate cancer incidence surveillance data with regard to race.
