Background: WISEWOMAN (Well Integrated Screening and Evaluation for WOMen Across the Nation) is a CDC-funded lifestyle intervention program aimed at reducing heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other chronic diseases among low-income uninsured women aged 40-64 years. Through screening and lifestyle interventions, the 15 funded WISEWOMAN projects seek to help women control their weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, become more physically active, adopt healthy eating habits, and stop smoking.

Methods Program participants complete an enrollment form that includes demographics questions, undergo an initial risk factor screening, attend lifestyle intervention sessions, and are re-screened within 14 months of the initial screening to assess health improvements. Providers ensure women access to medications as appropriate. WISEWOMAN projects have adapted various evidenced-based lifestyle interventions making the intervention culturally appropriate for the diverse populations served. Programs offer their intervention to participants to encourage improved health habits.

Results: In this session, the changes in CVD risk, blood pressure and cholesterol measurements, and tobacco use will be reported by racial/ethnic groups for the women served through the program. In addition, data will be reported showing the value added to other programs through the coordinated comprehensive approach used by WISEWOMAN and how the interventions impact multiple diseases.
